News & Events

Let's see what Northern Cocks Badminton Club is up to

What’s new?

Club Update 🌈🏸

Great news, the club continues to flourish! We are currently sitting at 217 paid members! 👬👭👬👭👫 Of course, with higher membership comes more work for the committee. I can’t thank the committee enough for all the time and effort they put into the club voluntarily.

It’s been mentioned recently that not everyone knows the committee each get a day where they are on ‘duty’ - this means taking payments, organising coaching or other activities, running the session by peg board or otherwise, and generally keeping an eye out to ensure everyone is keeping to the ethos. It’s a big task and often thankless! For that work, when the committee are on duty, they don’t pay the £3.50 for that session.

Your committee on duty:

Mondays: Mitch, Dean, Ritchie, Brandon, Gary, Will
Wednesdays: Keith
Thursdays: Sarah, Oliver, Raj, James, Temi
Saturdays: Kirs, David, John, Shoeb, Charles

Once per year I try to thank the committee for the work they do. It’s often a meal or similar. We discussed the above at the AGM along with budget plans for the coming year. We are working hard to ensure all members benefit as equally as possible. We had a mini budget review recently and have decided to increase budgets in the following areas:

Coaching - expect more of it! 🏋️
Shuttles - expect newer shuttles more often. 🏸
Socials - expect more socials, subsidised to make them affordable. 🍷
Welfare - we have trained new first aiders and will be increasing first aid kits. ⛑️
Christmas - expect a bigger and better tournament and after party than ever before! 🎄
Club birthday BBQ - expect a bigger BBQ with even more to offer. 🍗

FREE SESSIONS!
In celebration of the clubs 7th birthday, we are offering our Wednesday sessions completely free of charge for the entire month of July! Following this, we are offering a week-long celebration by offering a full week of free sessions in the lead up to the summer BBQ on the 8th August. That’s the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th of August for free! 💰

For those who don’t read my messages, I’ll be happy to accept payments from those who offer it 😉 Of course, the committee is always open to members who want to step up and help. We work as a team ❤️ Those not on the committee, if there is anything above you strongly disagree with, get in touch - I’m always happy to talk things through. ☺️

Northern Cocks AGM 2026

Our annual general meeting 🗓️ (AGM) is being held on Thursday 9th April 2026 at 🕗 8pm, right after Badminon session at the Velodrome.

The AGM gives the committee the opportunity to report back to members on the club’s progression over the last year and the plans for the future. 🔮 It’s an open forum, so the perfect environment for members to discuss topics they may currently feel strongly about. 💪🏻 You’ll receive an update on each of the committee roles, detailing what has progressed this year and what the plans are for the coming year. 🙌

One of the key points of an AGM is that it gives the official opportunity for current committee members to step down and for other members to step up into the committee. 🆕 Northern Cocks grows year on year, and this year has been no different! The size of the club has brought with it a lot more work for the committee. With that, I have drawn up a list of committee roles and responsibilities which will distribute the workload evenly and give lots of people an opportunity to contribute. 📈

Vice Chair 🪑

  • It is the vice chair’s responsibility to assist the chair in their duties and stand in for the chair when necessary.
  • Vice chair generally takes on a second role as detailed below.

General Committee 💛

  • The general committee role is as important as every other. The general committee are responsible for assisting all other committee members when required, bringing collaboration, and being a point of contact for new members. This role is often filled by newly joining committee members who want to give general help.

I would usually recommend new joiners to the committee join as general committee before taking on a named role. This gives you the opportunity to see how the club runs and what role you would enjoy filling. However, with the committee restructure, several roles are currently empty and we are looking for people to fill the following roles:

  • Welfare Officer (female/non-binary to work alongside our male Welfare Officer)
  • Northern Pride Lead
  • Social Secretary
  • Event Secretary
  • Engagement Officer
  • General Committee

If you think you could fill one of the above roles, would like to challenge for one of the filled roles, or would otherwise like more information on anything, get in touch with Pete before Thursday 2nd April 2026 so that everything can be put in place before the AGM. 📩 Likewise, if you would like anything specific discussed at the AGM, bring it to the attention of Pete or Ritchie before 2nd April. 📝

I hope you can make the AGM and I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Northern Cocks Session Systems

At Northern Cocks LGBTQ+ Badminton Club we play three times a week. 🗓️

🕕-🕗Mondays 6-8pm at Moss Side Leisure Centre
🕕-🕗Thursdays 6-8pm at the Velodrome (aka National Cycling Centre)
🕒-🕔Saturdays 3-5pm at Moss Side Leisure Centre

Each Session runs slightly differently, but every session is open to all levels from complete novice to A grade players. EVERYONE is welcome. None of our sessions require you to sign up before hand, you can turn up on the day. 🕰️ Here is how each session works:

Thursday
We have 8 courts available, and for this reason, it is a free play session. Each player self regulates and joins courts as they wish. It is still important to allow other players the opportunity to play, so it is important that once you complete a game, you leave the court and allow time for others to play.

Saturday
We have 5 courts on a Saturday. These sessions vary significantly in turn out, and for that reason we run a ‘rally tally.’ Upon arrival, ensure you write your name on the board. Then, after each of your games, mark a tally dash next to your name. You should take note of how you compare with other players each time you do this. If you are ahead of most, take a break and allow them to catch up. If you are behind, be a little keener and get yourself on for another game. 📈📉 Saturday sessions are also self-regulated, but committee members may ask you to take a prolonged break if they notice you have played more than your fair share. 🫸

Monday
Monday sessions are usually our busiest sessions and we have 5 courts. For this reason, we use a peg board on system. The peg board regulates games and ensures a fair amount of games for every player. Here’s how it works…

At the beginning of the session, put your name on the board, choosing between A/B+, B-/C+, C-/D. Then, at each 8 minute interval, you will be notified to check the board to see if a number is next to your name. That number correlates to the court numbers. If it’s a blank space, take an 8 minute break ☺️ Within 8 minutes you may not get to 21, or you may get to play a little past 21. In either case, play for the full 8 minutes and then exit the court.

We have 5 courts which means 20 players on court at any given time. We VERY rarely have fewer than 40 players on Monday sessions. This means you will likely have two games off in a row at times. There may even be times where you have three games off in a row to facilitate better mixing up of games. By the end of the session, each player will have had the same number of games +/-1. The math will not allow for everyone to have the exact same number of games, but the committee always try to ensure the rotations are fair and balanced. ⚖️

8 minutes is not a long time to create the next set of games, and not all committee members are as fluent with the board system as others. To ensure a smooth session, when a committee member is preparing the following games, please do not interrupt them by requesting games or striking up a conversation. If you need to speak to someone, find a different committee member or wait until the games have been set. 👩‍💻📊

It is important to note that Northern Cocks has always been a social club and each player should expect to play a couple of very well balanced games, a couple of games with stronger players, and a couple of games with weaker players. This is non-negotiable and an important part of the club ethos. It is imperative that you enter the appropriate section of the peg board. This ensures balanced games are created. It does not mean you won’t get competitive games. Should weaker players be in the A/B+ category, it will result in unbalanced games which is unfair to all players. For clarity, we often mix abilities on court by assigning two A players with two B players. Or two B players with two C players. Northern Cocks runs three tournaments per year and the committee use the peg board and where you have placed yourself to help decide on your grading and/or handicap. For this reason, it is beneficial to yourself to ensure you are in the appropriate grouping.

In summary, Northern Cocks is a social club with a strong club ethos. The above information is a strong part of that ethos. We are a very strong, friendly community of players and we all want everyone to enjoy the sessions and get a good number of games. The committee appreciate how much support we get during the busier sessions and look forward to facilitating those sessions going forward.

Thanks all and see you on the courts! ☺️🏸❤️

What’s happening?

Northern Cocks Summer Tournament 2026

🗓️ When: Saturday 25th July
📍 Where: Manchester Velodrome
🕙 Time: 10am-5pm
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Capacity: 80 players (16 per grade)
🏆 Grades: A, B+, B-, C+, C-
💰 Cost: £25 members or £30 non-members

Registration is now OPEN for this year’s summer tournament, and we are trying some new things, so please read all details before registering your interest!

➡️ We will be running a Swiss-style tournament. This means that every pair will play the same number of games throughout the day. There will be no knockout stage, no finals. At the end of the day, EVERY point scored throughout the day will count toward final scoring and will ultimately dictate which pairs win the medals!

➡️ The World Badminton Federation has trialed and adopted games to 15 points. For that reason - we are going to trial games to 15 in this tournament.

➡️ Due to the nature of this tournament, there will be no requirement to secure a 2-point lead. The game will end once one pair reaches 15 points. Switch sides at 8 points if any player wishes to.

➡️ The tournament will be handicapped and graded based on those handicaps. This means you do not need to enter a specific grade. The committee will vote and assign handicaps/gradings once the tournament is at capacity. These handicaps will be published before the tournament and there will be an opportunity to appeal your handicap.

Format of the day:

🌅 Morning: There will be a randomised round robin with blended grades. You will play 7 of these games. These games will not affect who you are paired with, but the points scored WILL contribute toward medals at the end of the tournament.

🥪 Lunch: A light lunch will be provided. Sandwiches, fruit, snacks. Please bring your own food and drinks should you require a substantial lunch.

👫 Pairings: Pairings will be decided randomly after lunch.

🔀 Afternoon: Once pairings are confirmed, everyone will be split into their gradings and you will play against each other pair once.

📣 Results: Everyone will play exactly 14 games and the points from each of these games will be combined with your partner’s results to give your final score. This means the second round robin game results will count twice, putting equal weight on each round robin. (Maximum score would be 420 each pair).

🏅 Medals: Every participant will gather for results, with the top three parings winning Bronze, Silver, Gold.

🎟️ Raffle: There will be a raffle, and any raffle donations will be gratefully received.

💆 Massage: A massage therapist will be on hand throughout the day offering short sports massages to enhance your performance. These slots are available to book now here: https://ncbadminton.co.uk/massage

🏸 Re-Stringing: Our resident stringer Harvey will be on site throughout the day offering stringing services on a pay-as-you-go basis.

🍻 After Party: This will take place at BarPop from 7.30pm. Stay tuned for more details closer to the date, but rest assured that the party will be action packed and entertaining!

Bristol Swifts
LYC London
Goslings London
Aberdeen Badminton Academy
Glasgow
Ledbury Badminton Club

Itinerary:

Friday - NC will be hosting Friday welcome drinks at the Molly House (M1 3NB) from 7pm. A great opportunity to meet your fellow competitors in a relaxed environment. But save the heavy drinking for Saturday!

Saturday - Where: The Velodrome (National Cycling Centre), M11 4DQ. When: 9am-4pm. How: Upon arrival, reception will be able to direct you to the courts (or follow the crowd). Entry is opposite the reception desk, turn left and go down the stairs.

Parking: There is plenty of free parking at the velodrome.

8am-9am - Registration and warm up. If you would like to arrive early to warm up and familiarise yourself with the shuttles and lighting, this is the time to do it. The lovey James will be checking everyone in and handing out goodie bags!

9am-9:10am - Welcome and pre tournament information by Pete.

9:10am-12pm - Round robin. The round robin will consist of 7 games per pairing, playing a selection (or all for C-) of the competing pairs in your grade. Based on game wins (with total points scored as a tie breaker), the top 8 pairs from each grade will move forward to the quarter finals. While every effort has been made to evenly spread these games for everyone, it’s important that games are played promptly when they are scheduled as there is not enough time for lengthy breaks. These games will be first to 21 with no setting (do not need 2 clear points to win). Each grade will have a pack of game sheets which will be numbered. Play the games in order where possible and use whichever court is free from your grades allocated courts. Toward the end of the round robin, use any free court should other grades finish their games earlier.

12-12:30pm - Group photos, grade photos, club photos. The photographer will line us all up in height order to then create the best aesthetic for the large group photo on the bleachers style seating. Once this photo is taken, there will be a photo for all participants in each grade, followed by club photos. If you would like to bring club banners etc, you are encouraged to!

12:30-1:15pm - Lunch. A light lunch is provided which will include sandwiches, fruit, and snacks. There is an Asda and McDonald’s right next door should you need anything more substantial throughout the day.

1:15-1:45pm - Quarter final games. These games will be best of 1, first to 21, with 2 clear points needed to win. (Max 30)

1:45-2:30pm - Semi-Final. These games will be best of three, with each game to 21 with 2 clear points needed for the win. (Max 30)

2:30-3:15pm - Finals and 3rd place playoff. These games will be best of three, each game to 21 with 2 clear points needed for the win. (Max 30)

3:15-3:45pm - Medal presentations and photographs.

3:45-4:00pm - Raffle draw.

Disclaimer: The timings for the day are going to be tight which is why we have brought the start time forward slightly. It is imperative that you play your games promptly when required. Should the timings fall short slightly, lunch may be cut short so that the quarter finals start promptly at 1.15. Should the timings fall short significantly, we may have to reduce the semi-final and final games down to best of 1. Please work collaboratively to ensure timings are kept to.

Goodie Bags! - Every participant will receive a goody bag upon registration with James at the beginning of the day. Please look after your bag and the contents as they are not labelled with individual names. Place them within your own bag or within your car for safekeeping. The goodie bags have been carefully curated to contain a variety of goodies suitable for most. Should any of the items within not be for you, pass them along to a friend to make use of.

Instagram Competition! - We want you to have a great day and take loads of photos. Please tag @northerncocks in all your posts and stories on Instagram. The best post throughout the day (decided by Pete) will win 5 free drinks at BarPop at the after party! Bonus points for making use of the goody bag itself or the contents within your photos!

Raffle! - We love a good raffle at Northern Cocks and this year is no different. There will be plenty of prizes up for grabs which will be on display at the registration desk. You can buy tickets from James at any point throughout the day up to 3.30pm.

4pm-8pm - Time to refresh, eat, and glam up for the after party! There are too many of us to book a table for dinner, but for those not from Manchester, here are a few local suggestions for dinner which have lots of options without the need for a reservation:
Mackie Mayor
Freight Island
Society
Hello Oriental

8pm-late - After Party at BarPop! We have the function room upstairs at BarPop all booked and ready to go at 8pm. It’s a great location providing the perfect space for socialising after a long day of sport!

Anyone who has won a BarPop drink voucher will need to speak to Pete to claim the drink. Not the BarPop staff who will be very confused if you try to cash it in with them!

Even more drinks?! After midnight the hardcore few often spilt between the goose or the eagle, but should you want to continue partying and are unsure where people have gone, a message in the WhatsApp social chat/tournament chat usually does the trick.

There may be interruptions to train travel over the weekend. Please double check any travel plans you may have to ensure a smooth journey.

In summary:

Friday:
7pm - welcome drinks at Molly House

Saturday:
8am - warm up/registration

• Coupon code will be in your membership confirmation email. 📧

By HUGE popular demand, the Christmas Tournament will take the same format as the Summer Tournament. ☀️❄️

Each member will be handicapped before the day, ranging from -8 to +8. These handicaps are a combined reflection of the committee’s opinion of your current skill level, along with each member’s self grading on Monday night badminton sessions. 📊

As a reminder, those in the -

  • A/B+ grade will be ranked -8, -6, or -4.
  • B-/C+ grade will be ranked -2, 0, or +2.
  • C-/D grade will be ranked +4, +6, or +8.

Following the handicap allocation, all players will be split into grades A, B+, B-, C+, C-/D. On the day, for each grading the tournament will be split into a round robin stage, group stage, semi finals, and finals. 🏅 The round robin will consist of 8 games each, mixed with random pairings from across the grades. The results will dictate your pairing for the remainder of the tournament.

The group stage will group pairings within their grading. With handicaps still in place, the group stage should all be very close, competitive matches! Each group will have 4 pairs. The top two pairs from each group will go forward into the semi-finals. The winners of each semi-final will move forward into the final! The handicaps will remain throughout, and EVERY POINT COUNTS! A win is great, but the total combined points from your games will be key throughout.

It wouldn’t be queer badminton without some extra fun… there will be a raffle throughout the day with some great prizes! There will also be a break for lunch, which will be provided by the club… let a committee member know if you have dietary requirements! 🍌

FAQs:

Do I need to play in the tournament to come to the meal?
Absolutely not! Each part of the day is completely independent, so you can choose to join for the tournament, meal, and party independently. You don’t need to partake at all to submit end of year award votes.

Am I good enough for the tournament?
Without a doubt! The tournament is designed specifically to cater for ALL abilities. If you are unsure, ask around. Anyone who took part in the summer tournament will be able to vouch for how much fun it was!

Can my partner come to the meal and party?
For the meal - possibly. The meal is meant for members and space is limited. Should non-members wish to join, message me and I will see if there is space. Non-members would pay full price for the meal. For the after party - all are welcome!
