Welcome to the new Northern Cocks website!
Please take a moment to look through the various pages for all the information you could need. From the new NC shop to the tournament sign-up page, there is so much to explore! While I may have written most of the words on the website (absolutely no AI, thank you very much!).
A thank you must go out to the entire committee for testing the beta website and for giving suggestions for what we need on there, a true team effort. But a huge special thank you must go out to Kirs for tirelessly working day in, day out to put everything together, using his technical expertise to create what I hope you agree is an amazing website! This fresh new look could not have happened without him. A big thank you to Mitch and Gary for playing big parts in putting several pieces together, leaning hard on each of their strengths.

With each year that passes, a new committee is elected to help me run this amazing club. Each new committee brings with it a vast amount of experiences, opinions, expertise, and personality! Each year feels like an evolution of the club, led by those who selflessly give their free time to contribute to the running of the club.

Pride Weekend 2025

Thursday badminton is on as normal if you would like to play. But it would also be great if a good group of us turn up for the gay olympics! (6.30 arrival, outside Via). Wear the new club tops to best represent us, whether you are participating or just watching. 👕🎽
Saturday is the pride parade. Our arrival time is 10:30am, so get there early as we are near the front of the parade! ❤️
If you haven’t walked in a parade before, I would very highly recommend! It’s so much fun, it’s uplifting and gives you such a high! Would be great to have everyone walk with us. 🚶♂️🚶♀️
After the parade, we are having our pride social at the back of church. It will be our private space - meaning our own bar, toilets, and seats! Three rarities over pride! All are welcome to join us - those walking in the parade and those watching from the sidelines. The club will provide a light lunch to line the stomach!🍷🚽🪑🥪
Monday is the bank holiday so our badminton session has an adjusted time. The new time is 12-2pm. The perfect session to work out all the alcohol from the weekend! 🕑
There is no Monday social at BarPop as they will still be rammed with those still partying for pride. But the Monday socials will resume next week. 🍕🍕🍕
6th Birthday Summertime BBQ
Northern Cocks LGBTQ+ badminton club is celebrating its 6th birthday! To commemorate this day, Pete and James are hosting a summertime social BBQ. 🎂 🎈 🎁
Location: Pete & James house (DM for address)
Time: 12pm - 8pm
BBQ will be in operation 1-2pm
Food will be provided, so no need to bring any, but please bring what you would like to drink. 🥤
Please be aware that we have a new sofa so would request no drinks on or around the sofa please! 🛋️
IMPORTANT - Oasis 🎸 will be playing in Heaton Park (3pm-11pm) which will bring a host of obstacles.
Travel: we would recommend getting the tram to Bowker Vale (Bury Line), we are a short walk from this stop. Should you wish to drive, there should be plenty of parking outside but you must display something with our address in the windscreen or else you’ll get a ticket, so speak to us. 🎫
We have set the BBQ timing specifically so that people can avoid the crowds/mayhem. By around 8pm, we will begin heading to the gay village for anyone who wishes to continue partying. 🕺 This will avoid the mass Oasis exodus.
Our street (along with many others) will be closed to road users from 9.30pm, but on the plus side, it is used as a taxi rank. So getting a taxi would be fairly easy!
The day is set to be a scorcher!!! So please equip yourself with sun cream, hats, etc. Do try to drink responsibly if you can 🤣
We do have a hot tub in the garden which comfortably sits 6 people. You are welcome to take advantage of this, so bring some speedos if you’d like to pop in 🛁👙
There is a poll on the announcements chat to confirm your attendance. It would be very highly appreciated if you could ensure you have ticked a box if you plan to attend, as I will be buying all the food tomorrow.
Our Saturday badminton session has been cancelled in order for us to come together and celebrate Northern Cocks, the progress the club has made, and the amazing community it has built. Join us for a catch up and burger. 🍔 ❤️🏸
Northern Cocks Summer Tournament
When: August 9th
Time: 10am-5pm
Where: Manchester Velodrome
The handicap tournament returns with a slight tweak we are trialling!
Handicaps will be assigned to each player by committee consensus, ranging from -8 to +8
There will be a round robin of roughly 8 games per person, played as usual - pairing you with 8 randomised partners, playing against 8 randomised pairs. This is one of the major compliments this tournament receives, because you will likely play with people whom you’ve never played with before - a true social mash up of players and game styles.
The results of the round robin will place you in a league table with everyone else, based on how many points you scored in your eight games. But here is where this trial differs from the usual handicap tournaments… before pairing players up, we will be separating players based on their ability. Essentially, a graded tournament, with handicaps!
Each grade will have exactly 16 players, and the pairings will be based on the results of the round robin.
Rank 1 paired with 16
Rank 2 paired with 15
Etc.
From here you will play a group stage with three other pairs. With every point counting, the top 2 pairs from each group will go through to the semi-finals!
With the usual top-notch medals, prizes, and lunch - it will be a day to remember.
The after party is booked at BarPop, so get your dancing shoes on regardless of whether you play in the tournament!
Registration is open NOW! Click here register your interest: https://ncbadminton.co.uk/registerinterest. As each set of 16 players register, you will be sent a payment link to pay for your spot. This will then secure your place in the tournament, as it will be first come, first served.
